UNION FOCUS

BRIGHT

future

In the second of a new series of visits around the country, we stopped off at the KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Golf Association for a catch up on developments

The KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Golf Association (KZNLGA), the largest union of handicapped women golfers in South Africa, has taken a significant step forward in growing the game through its Junior Development Programme, in partnership with Royal Durban Golf Club. This collaboration has already made a strong and meaningful impact, highlighting KZNLGA's commitment to developing young talent across the province.

In January, the programme officially launched its inaugural School Birdie Programme at Royal Durban Golf Club, with KZNLGA at the forefront of this exciting initiative. Designed to introduce young girls to golf in a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment, the session welcomed 23 learners from Durban Girls' College. The energy and enthusiasm on the day reflected the success of KZNLGA's vision, supported by experienced coaches from the 1st 2 8teen Junior Academy who guided the participants through their first golfing experiences. This Schools Birdie Programme marks the beginning of what promises to be a sustainable and impactful development pipeline.

In a further boost to the initiative, Royal Durban Golf Club has been officially confirmed as the home of the KZNLGA Junior Development Programme. This milestone reinforces KZNLGA's leadership in junior golf, providing a central, high-quality hub where young players can grow, train, and thrive.

KZNLGA's programme is focused on identifying and nurturing emerging talent, offering structured coaching, competitive opportunities, and clear pathways for progression within the sport. Through strong collaboration with partners – including KZNGU, GolfRSA, schools, coaches, and parents – KZNLGA continues to drive meaningful development and accessibility in golf.

With Royal Durban's rich heritage and commitment to excellence, the partnership creates the ideal environment for KZNLGA to expand its impact and shape the next generation of golfers in KwaZulu-Natal. As the programme gains momentum, it stands as a testament to KZNLGA's dedication to the long-term growth and transformation of the game. Club management has expressed great enthusiasm for the partnership and looks forward to the collaborative effort in building a strong, sustainable future for young golfers in the region.

MEET MARINA NEL

As president of the KZNLGA, what excites you about the future of golf in your province?

I am energised by the future – especially the incredible potential of our junior players. Watching this new generation grow in skill, confidence, and passion for the game is truly inspiring. KZNLGA is proud to play a key role in shaping that journey by creating meaningful opportunities for development and growth. What excites me even more is the phenomenal support from the women across our province. Their enthusiasm and commitment are driving real momentum and making a tangible difference.

What is your ultimate dream?

We are passionate about making golf more accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all, and I feel incredibly privileged to be part of this journey. My vision is to build a lasting legacy: a strong, sustainable development programme, and a vibrant, thriving ladies' golf community that will continue to inspire and empower women for generations to come.

Is golf a gateway to life?

Yes! I'm on a mission to inspire a life-long love for golf in the next generation. For me, it's about more than just the game – it's about instilling a passion that stays with you for life, along with the values and life skills golf naturally teaches. I'm deeply committed to junior development and love spreading joy, one swing at a time. Whether I'm supporting KZN's rising young stars or sharing a laugh with the ladies, I believe golf should always be fun, inclusive, and uplifting. If there's one thing I pride myself on, it's bringing smiles both on and off the course while growing a game that people can enjoy for a lifetime.

MEET THE VICE-PRESIDENTS

Leanne Parsons
(1st vice-president):

Fiercely loyal and committed, she had a successful corporate career and only worked for one company – the Johannesburg Stock Exchange – for 34 years. Comes from a golfing family but had no interest in playing golf until age 35. Only likes to play with even numbered golf balls. Her favourite food is prawns and she was taught to clean and peel them from the age of nine by her gran when they camped at Mozambique each year.

Melissa Savio
(2nd vice-president):

A fun-loving, energetic and dependable person who loves the outdoors and thrives on watching the youth achieve excellence on their golfing journeys. An ardent supporter of live theatre as well as being a plant and animal lover. Will 'go the extra mile' where friends and family are concerned and certainly with any initiative to grow youth in sport.
