Energetic and committed, the 2025 PGA Professional of the Year is making a tangible difference in growing the game

BY SIMON OSLER

Hans Jonck has been involved in the golf industry for half his life. The 34-year-old started working part time in Centurion Country Club's pro shop when he was just 17 and in matric.

He went on to become an apprentice and qualified as a PGA professional in 2014, and in 2025 achieved his Fellow status within the PGA of South Africa.

The current PGA Professional of the Year has an infectious enthusiasm for the game and a passion for helping clubs become self sufficient and profitable. He was also named national PGA Entrepreneur of the Year in 2023, as well as winning the PGA Management Award in 2025.

From becoming the youngest General Manager in the country at age 24 at Centurion Country Club in 2015 – after completing a 12 month stint as Retail & Golf Manager at Mount Edgecombe Country Club – to returning as General Manager at Centurion where it all began. In short, Jonck has been involved in almost every aspect of the game.

Jonck is strong on data analysis and interpretation, using insights to design turnaround strategies that address both operational efficiency and financial sustainability. Together with his team at MyHomeClub, he undertakes audits of how clubs are functioning and provides tailored solutions to ensure long-term profitability.

'Clubs need to be seen as businesses, and as such the model of being run by committee is now outdated,' he said. 'While we maintain the social and recreational element of the club, we manage a facility with a professional and holistic approach.'

He emphasises that clubs must operate with committees and boards shifting into oversight and support roles rather than day-to-day management. This ensures accountability, while allowing professional managers to drive operational and financial success.

Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, MyHomeClub has grown steadily over the past seven years and has now interacted with 64 clubs nationwide.

Its main priority is providing an opportunity for a small club, potentially at risk of closure, to become a medium sized club that is self sustaining.

Jonck holds the brand of the PGA of South Africa in high regard, believing it has provided him with his livelihood, his family, and his purpose in life.

'The PGA has given me my livelihood and so being able to provide for my wife Michelle and my two boys — we celebrated our 10th anniversary on 19th March — and has also given me opportunities to travel the world,' he said.

Constantly on the go, Jonck has taken just over 120 flights in the past two years. This year began with a busy schedule that included attending the annual PGA Show for the world's golf professionals in Orlando, Florida in January, followed by visits to courses in Zimbabwe.

One aspect of the industry that Jonck feels needs attention is the ability to hold on to youngsters who have a passion for golf, even if they don't make it as playing professionals. He believes there are endless opportunities in the golf industry for those who want to build a career.

'We need more young managers, financially strong individuals, hospitality staff, greenkeepers, mechanics – and South Africa provides endless opportunities for these roles. We support them in these positions,' he said.

PGA Management Award Winner Hans Jonck talks about his journey from a teenager working in a pro-shop to providing key support for club management.

As if he doesn't have enough on his plate, Jonck also lectures in four subjects at the Golf Management Campus based at Zwartkop Country Club in Centurion, and in two subjects at the PGA of South Africa annual Residentials, while also hosting multiple webinars.

MyHomeClub offers turnkey management solutions, advisory services, consultations, and bespoke projects tailored to the operational possibilities of golf clubs. The company also works with operating software to streamline club management and enhance efficiency.
