Union President Maureen Weimar shares why Western Province Golf is one of South Africa's most vibrant and successful regions

A golf union is often defined by its trophies, representative teams and major events, but its real impact lies in the work done every day to grow and sustain the game. Behind the scenes, volunteers, administrators, clubs and partners create opportunities for players of all ages and abilities, nurture talent and ensure the game continues to thrive.

We sat down with Western Province Golf President Maureen Weimar (pictured) to explore the people, partnerships and vision that make one of South Africa's most vibrant golfing regions a success.

What do you think makes Western Province Golf successful?

'Western Province Golf is fortunate to have an Executive Committee of dedicated volunteers who generously give their time, expertise and passion to the game. Their role is to provide the leadership, governance and strategic direction needed to ensure golf remains accessible and continues to thrive.

'It is not always an easy responsibility. We serve a diverse golfing community with different needs and expectations, and balancing those interests can be challenging. While it is impossible to please everyone all the time, our commitment is to make fair and responsible decisions that are in the best interests of the game.

'Our role is to support our clubs, encourage collaboration and help facilitate solutions that strengthen golf in our region. Everything we do is guided by the long-term health and success of the game in the Western Province.'

Meet the Team

At the heart of Western Province Golf is a young and dynamic team, guided by General Manager Melissa Loretz, whose dedication extends well beyond administration to supporting every aspect of the game.

Two team members, AB Adams and La-eeqah Adams, are products of WPG's own junior and development initiatives – a testament to the lasting impact of the province's investment in growing the game.

Junior golf is expertly guided by Siegmund Human, while Lindy Magnussen plays a pivotal role in supporting clubs and members and coordinating the Union's busy tournament schedule.

Together, the team manages tournaments and leagues, assists players and delivers the programmes and opportunities that golfers enjoy throughout the year. Their professionalism, energy and passion, together with the support of volunteers and stakeholders, continue to strengthen both Western Province Golf and the game it serves.

Tell us about WPG and its affiliated clubs

Affiliated clubs are the foundation of golf in the Western Province, and WPG works closely with them to promote good governance, effective administration and meaningful playing opportunities. By listening to concerns and encouraging collaboration, WPG helps build a strong and sustainable golfing community.

From time to time, clubs face significant challenges, as is currently the case with King David Mowbray Golf Club. In such instances, WPG engages constructively, facilitates dialogue where appropriate and advocates for outcomes that protect the long-term interests of golf and its participants.

The Executive Committee is also acutely aware that without the support of affiliated members through their annual affiliation fees, WPG would not be able to fulfil its constitutional objectives. As a non-profit organisation, WPG is committed to managing these funds responsibly and keeping fees as affordable as possible while continuing to deliver programmes and services that support the long-term growth of the game.

Building the future of the game

Developing the next generation of golfers remains one of WPG's highest priorities. Through coaching initiatives, tournaments, representative opportunities and clear player pathways, young golfers are introduced to the game and encouraged to progress at every stage of their journey.

Long-standing partnerships with the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB), the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA), the Rands a Round Club and WP Nomads play a vital role in making golf more accessible, inclusive and sustainable. These partnerships provide coaching, competition and development opportunities while helping remove barriers to participation.

WPG also places great emphasis on creating team environments founded on respect, accountability, camaraderie and pride. Representing Western Province is about more than performance; it is an opportunity to develop leadership skills, build lifelong friendships and become ambassadors for the province. Many former Western Province players have gone on to represent South Africa and enjoy successful careers in the game.

Creating opportunities to compete

WPG administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and leagues that caters for golfers of all ages and abilities. These competitions encourage participation, foster healthy rivalries and provide meaningful opportunities for players to develop and test their skills.

Given the cost and logistical challenges of travelling to national ranking events, WPG has worked hard to create competitive opportunities closer to home. The extensive fixture calendar allows golfers to gain valuable experience, earn ranking points and prepare for provincial and national competition.

The programme includes flagship championships, elite amateur events, the Amateur Tour and Senior Series, numerous junior tournaments and a dedicated caddie tournament series and Order of Merit. In addition, WPG administers five men's leagues, two women's leagues and a High Schools League, strengthening the bonds between affiliated clubs and the wider golfing community.

Who helps preserve the integrity of the game?

Golf is unique in the degree to which it relies on the honesty and integrity of its participants. WPG is fortunate to work alongside the Western Province Golf Referees Association (WPGRA), whose dedicated rules officials generously volunteer their time and expertise in service of the game.

Their role extends beyond officiating tournaments. They assist clubs with course marking, Model local rules and rules administration, while also providing education and guidance to players, club officials and tournament organisers.

Through their commitment, these volunteers help ensure the game is played fairly and uphold the values of integrity, sportsmanship and respect that lie at the heart of golf.

What does the future hold for WPG?

The continued success of golf in Western Province depends on strong clubs and partnerships, engaged members, dedicated volunteers and talented players. WPG remains committed to creating opportunities for golfers to learn, compete and excel, and supporting the structures that make those opportunities possible.

Together with our affiliated clubs and valued partners, we are not only developing better golfers, we are building a stronger golfing community and securing the future of the game in the Western Province.
