In our latest update on what’s available in South African stores and online, we highlight the Wilson Staff CB irons

Eagle-eyed golf fanatics might have spotted the difference before now. But many of us will be today-years-old to have seen that the logo for the most successful golf manufacturer when it comes to Major winners has been changed. When Gary Woodland became the last winner on the men’s regular Tour to win a Major – the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach – he did so with a Wilson Staff Prototype driving iron and a Staff Model Blade 3-iron. His clubs had the famous ‘Wilson shield’ logo.

That Wilson Staff shield first showed up in the late 1950s on Wilson’s Dyna-Powered Staff Model clubs, but it had two golf flags in the middle. The W/S shield showed up in 1960 and remained relatively unchanged until there was a font overhaul for Wilson’s 100th anniversary in 2014.

It has since evolved and if you look closely at the logo of the new Wilson Staff CB irons, you will notice there’s no ‘W’ or ’S’.

‘Our team here is pretty young. Most of us are under the age of 35,’ says Markus McCaine, the global director of marketing for Wilson Golf. ‘We’re the golf sickos in the room. We’re going to build the brand we want and not worry about what people who’ve been here for a while want or think consumers want.

‘There’s a playbook the bigger brands run. We can’t compete with them on dollars but we can be fresh and relevant. We can begin to skate to where the puck is going versus where the puck is,’ he told MyGolfSpy. No prizes for guessing what continent McCaine plays his golf on!

DID YOU KNOW?

Wilson Golf has the most Major championship wins by a golf manufacturer, with players using Wilson equipment having claimed 62 Major victories since 1914. The brand has achieved at least one Major win in every decade since the 1920s.

BROADLY SPEAKING

The Wilson Staff CB Irons are favoured by Tour professionals who want instant feedback, more forgiveness on longer iron shots and the ability to manoeuvre the ball on command. One of the hallmarks of the Wilson Staff CB irons is the forged 8620 carbon-steel faces. This imparts a soft and smooth feel, so you can go after every shot and get more consistent results. Precision-milled grooves in the face generate more spin and increased stopping power.

WHO BENEFITS MOST?

  • Low- to mid-handicap golfers. While high-handicappers will benefit from the mis-hit correction the tungsten toe weights offer, mid-handicappers with faster swing speeds will unlock the distance.
  • Players with higher swing speeds who don't struggle with distance.
  • Golfers seeking a blend of a blade-like feel and workability with the forgiveness of a cavity-back design.
  • A good choice for golfers transitioning from traditional muscle-back irons to a more forgiving option.

WHAT YOU GET

The stock seven-piece set for each is 4-iron through to pitching-wedge. The Staff Model CBs offer optional 2- and 3-irons as well as a gap-wedge, which can be ordered through Wilson.
