It could be said that you’re a Durbanite, but you’re well-travelled. Would you say you’ve come full circle?
Yes! It is wonderful to be back, and I am blessed to call Mount Edgecombe Country Club home. After matriculating at DHS and studying at Unisa and Varsity College, I worked for Second Chance Golf Shop as well as at the Bluff and Umhlali golf courses. I continued at the Pro Shop in Springfield Park before venturing into the betting industry, working for Hollywoodbets, Gold Circle and later Phumelela. I then returned to club life at Killarney CC and have been with MECC for the past 19 months.
What is your role as CEO?
It’s to strategically manage how we deliver the best possible experience to our members. I oversee 146 staff, who maintain and provide services across golf, food and beverage, entertainment and other sports. There are also various SLAs that require daily communication. Every day is different, no matter what is planned in my diary and we all need to be agile in our approach. Our mission is to set the standard as KZN’s leading golf and lifestyle estate.

Do you get a chance to play the courses yourself, and if so, what is your handicap?
I don’t get out on the course as much as I’d like, and my Handicap Index is now 10.3, which is a little frustrating considering I used to be a +2. Golf has a way of keeping you humble!
Mount Edgecombe CC is the only 36-hole facility in KZN. What opportunities does this provide for members and events?
With over 3 000 members, having two championship 18-hole courses means everyone can play without compromise. It also allows us to host corporate and special events, while members continue to enjoy access to the other course, making the club truly exceptional.
In terms of playing, how do the two courses differ?
The Woods is more open and offers beautiful parkland views while The Lakes is just that, a course built around water hazards. The wind there can make tee shots tricky, so you really have to think about placement.
VISITOR GREEN FEES
Members pay R420 for green fees on both The Woods and The Lakes.
Affiliated Guest rates differ, with weekdays at R535 and weekends at R600.

Tell us something people might not know about Mount Edgecombe?
Mount Edgecombe has two residential estates bordering both courses. In 2024 and 2025, the estates and the golf club both won Best of Durban, each in its own category. We also offer a variety of other sporting and lifestyle activities, including padel, tennis, squash, bridge, gardening, bird and environmental clubs, paddling, and angling.
What are the signature holes?
The par-three 15th on The Woods is the signature hole. Elevated and playing just 151m from the white tees, it is surrounded by water and any mishit will be punished. On The Lakes, a bunker redesign and upgrade in 2025 has created a new potential signature hole, the dogleg-right par-four 6th. A fairway bunker has been added and an amphitheatre now surrounds the green.
How many staff members are dedicated to maintaining the courses?
Matkovich Turf, under Kevin Stone, looks after our courses, with Golf Director Andrew van der Knaap setting the direction we want to take. Mary Sibaya is our head greenkeeper and she does a phenomenal job. All in all, there are over 70 staff maintaining and managing our courses.

What does the next 12 months have in store for Mount Edgecombe?
I have been here 19 months, and during that time we have focused on engineering projects to protect the clubhouse and other essential infrastructure. KZN has faced dramatic rainfall and other catastrophic events since 2022. Fortunately, we have also been able to extend our members’ bar area and undertake a massive bunker upgrade on The Lakes. This year, our main project outside of ongoing engineering works will hopefully be upgrading The Watershed Café, creating a vibrant lifestyle hub for our members.
How many members does the Club have, and what is the membership structure like?
As mentioned, the club has over 3 000 members, and new members are always welcome. While there are around 1 150 houses on the estate, many of our members have chosen to join from outside the estate. We have many membership options to suit different needs. Some members join to focus on golf, others to enjoy other sports, and some simply to enjoy the club life.
How often is a hole-in-one recorded?
It seems to come in waves. Last year, there was a run on The Woods where several were made in quick succession, and there were 37 hole-in-ones in 2025. This year we've already had a couple of holes in one on The Woods, including one from Durban Super Giants' bowler Eathan Bosch.
What is the 19th hole experience like?
Our upgraded bar is a stunning wooden bar with timeless character and beautiful views over the 9th, 10th, and 18th holes, where members and guests can watch golfers make their final approach and sink their putts. They can also enjoy the sunrise and sunset or settle in to watch sport on the large, big-screen TVs. The outside deck is a place to relax, unwind, and soak in the atmosphere, bringing everyone together and reflecting the club life that Mount Edgecombe represents.

FIRST BALL
Durban Super Giants' and Dolphins' fast bowler Eathan Bosch got his golfing year off to a quick start with a hole in one on The Woods course in January. Eathan, the son of former South African Test bowler Tertius Bosch, used an eight iron on the par-three fifth for his ace. Bosch, who made his debut for the South African ODI team a year ago, had just finished his commitments for the Durban Super Giants in the 2026 SA20 when he hit the perfect golf shot.
