The innovative GolfSixes format is helping drive youngsters and beginners to the game
In 2023, GolfRSA partnered with the R&A and launched the popular GolfSixes League in South Africa, and the shorter, fun and fast-paced version aimed at drawing beginners to the game has already created a huge fan club.
GolfSixes in South Africa is split into GolfSixes Events and SAGDB GolfSixes Leagues, and through the SAGDB GolfSixes League, GolfRSA and the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) are also actively breaking down barriers and creating lasting opportunities for underprivileged junior golfers across the country.
Now in its third season, the league has taken root in 11 of the 14 SAGDB regions, with more in the pipeline. For many of these young players, the league not only provides a sporting experience but also a sense of belonging, exposure to new environments and the confidence that comes with being part of a team.
Michael Johnston, project manager for the GolfSixes League at GolfRSA, says the impact goes far beyond the game. ‘For many of these players, it’s their first time setting foot on a golf course,’ he explains. ‘That first step builds confidence – not just in their game, but in themselves too.’

The league’s impact was powerfully showcased through two standout activations earlier this year. On 2 February, the top two teams from the Mpumalanga SAGDB GolfSixes League went head-to-head at the Africa Amateur Championship, playing on the par-three course at the National Junior Development Centre (NJDC) at Leopard Creek – a rare and unforgettable experience at one of South Africa’s most iconic venues.
Just weeks later, on 28 February, 12 players from the KZN SAGDB League took part in a memorable activation at the South African Open Pro-Am at Durban Country Club. They walked nine holes alongside professionals like Charl Schwartzel and Casey Jarvis, followed by a short game clinic with Wilco Nienaber and Rupert Kaminski – a day that left a deep and lasting impression
These are more than just special appearances – they’re moments of connection, belief and visibility for young players who may never have imagined themselves playing golf. Together, GolfRSA and the SAGDB are growing the game not just in numbers, but in meaning too – creating a future where golf truly reflects the full potential of South Africa’s youth.

FUN, FAST AND FRIENDLY GOLF FOR BEGINNERS
If your kid is curious about golf but has never picked up a club, GolfRSA’s GolfSixes Events might just be the perfect starting point.
Designed specifically for junior beginner golfers, these one-day events are about inclusion, fun, and experience – not competition. With a format inspired by the R&A’s popular GolfSixes League in Europe, South Africa’s version brings a fresh, family-friendly twist to the sport.
Held at various golf clubs, these events offer a six-hole experience, with each hole between 100 and 200 metres– just the right length to be challenging, but not overwhelming. Played in a Texas Scramble format, young players pair up with a buddy and work as a team to get through the course.
‘We wanted to create an event where kids aren’t intimidated by the sport,’ says Johnston. ‘Parents ride along in carts, help with scoring and cheer from the sidelines. The vibe is completely different from a traditional tournament – it’s about encouragement, teamwork and fun.’
Whether your child dreams of one day teeing off at The Masters, or just wants a new sport to try, GolfSixes is the perfect way to get started. No pressure, no leaderboard… just smiles, team play, and a great afternoon out.
