The Club at Steyn City is geared up to host the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Cup qualifier
By MIKE GREEN

The championship fairways of The Club at Steyn City will witness more than just golfing excellence on 15 April. This fantastic venue is hosting the South African qualifier for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup, an amateur tournament with a purpose, now in its 25th year of charitable impact.
The Duke of Edinburgh Cup is a distinguished global initiative under Royal Patronage, dedicated to improving young lives through health, education and welfare support. To date, it has raised over £5.3-million (R125-million) for charities that empower disadvantaged youth, proving the power of sport to drive meaningful change. The event blends competitive spirit with philanthropy, uniting golfers under a shared commitment to making a difference.
The Steyn City qualifier, played on the stunning Nicklaus-designed course, offers local golfers a rare opportunity to compete on one of South Africa’s finest layouts while supporting a global cause. The course is renowned for its challenging design and breathtaking scenery, providing an unforgettable experience for participants. For one fortunate pair, the stakes are even higher: a coveted spot at the World Final in England, with a trip valued at over R90 000 per person – an opportunity to represent South Africa on an international stage.

This global tournament, overseen by International Golf for Youth (IGFY), follows a Stableford format using a handicap system under R&A or USGA rules. The competition is structured to ensure fairness, allowing players of varying skill levels to participate on an equal footing. A minimum of two successful pairs from each qualifier earn invitations to the World Final in England, where organisers cover expenses, including flights, accommodation, ground transport, three rounds of golf and a prize-giving dinner at Windsor Castle. The experience extends beyond golf, immersing participants in the prestige and tradition of this remarkable event.

ROLE MODEL
In 2023, Justin Rose was named golfing ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup.
‘I am delighted to accept the position of ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup as raising funds through golf for children in need continues to be a passion and focus of mine,’ he said.
‘I particularly appreciate how the organisers of each event are able to select the cause most needed in their local community where the monies are being raised.’
In a social media post, Rose added: ‘I see so much opportunity for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup to expand its reach and help more people in need, through the game of golf.
‘With my wife Kate joining as one of the Trustees, we look forward to playing our part in supporting such a good cause.’
If a qualifier raises significant funds, IGFY trustees may expand the number of qualifying pairs, furthering the opportunity for golfers to compete on a global stage. The World Final itself spans two days, featuring competition on two prestigious courses near London. Additionally, players will take part in a friendly match against members of the Royal Household Golf Club, held at Windsor Castle – a rare privilege that adds to the allure of the event.
The Duke of Edinburgh Cup has enjoyed the steadfast patronage of ATFX, a globally recognised online broker, for eight years. ATFX goes beyond sponsorship; it shares a long-term commitment to social impact, aligning with the tournament’s mission to empower young people. As an FCA-regulated company based in the United Kingdom, ATFX has been expanding its presence in South Africa, reinforcing its philosophy of corporate responsibility and community support.
ATFX’s support of the Duke of Edinburgh Cup reflects its broader vision of giving back to society. The company’s commitment to ethical practices, financial literacy, and global outreach aligns seamlessly with the tournament’s core values. For golfers – many of whom value strategic investment and long-term planning – ATFX’s focus on responsible growth is especially relevant and appealing.

The Steyn City qualifier is an opportunity to compete at a world-class venue, vie for a prestigious prize and contribute to a cause that transforms lives
The Duke of Edinburgh Cup World Final reaches its grand conclusion with a black-tie awards ceremony in the State Rooms of Windsor Castle. A member of the Royal Family will be in attendance, underscoring the event’s significance and reinforcing its mission of service through sport. This moment serves as a fitting conclusion to a tournament rooted in purpose and prestige.
The Steyn City qualifier is an opportunity to compete at a world-class venue, vie for a prestigious prize and contribute to a cause that transforms lives. As the sun sets on 15 April, one pair will earn their place in England, but every participant will have played a role in supporting the Duke of Edinburgh Cup’s mission.
