Paul Stubbs explores the hidden gem of Al Hamra Golf Club in Ras Al Khaimah
Tucked away in the serene Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Golf Club stands as one of the UAE's most stunning and challenging courses.
It offers a rare blend of natural beauty, sophisticated design and a rich history that appeals to golfers of all levels. Whether you're an experienced player or a casual enthusiast, Al Hamra promises an unforgettable round of golf, complemented by breathtaking views and a layout that pushes your game to its limits.
Al Hamra Golf Club, designed by renowned architect Peter Harradine, opened its doors in 2007. The course was carefully crafted to blend with the natural landscape, offering a true test of skill amid the region's iconic sand dunes, lush greenery, and crystal-clear waters.
Situated along the coastline of Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Golf Club is part of the larger Al Hamra Village development, which was envisioned as a luxury community that would put Ras Al Khaimah on the global map of golf destinations.
Despite being one of the younger courses in the region, Al Hamra has quickly gained a reputation for its unique design and stunning surroundings. The course is also home to the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship, further solidifying its standing in the world of golf.
Al Hamra Golf Course spans 6 663m from the back tees and features 18 holes that wind through a mix of open fairways, water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. The course is known for its perfect balance of challenging and forgiving holes, ensuring each round offers something new, whether you're chasing a low score or simply enjoying the game.
While the entire course presents a challenge, there are a few holes that stand out for their difficulty and the level of skill required to conquer them.

Hole 4 (Par four, 400m): This hole requires a long, accurate drive to avoid water hazards that cut across the fairway. A tough dogleg left forces players to navigate around a series of strategically placed bunkers that guard the green. With out-of-bounds areas on both sides and the constant pressure of the water, it's a hole that demands power and precision.
Hole 8 (Par three, 170m): A beautifully challenging par three, the 8th features a large water hazard that runs along the front of the green, making it a test of accuracy and club selection. The wind can also play a role in how the hole plays, with players needing to factor in distance and direction.
Hole 12 (Par five, 521m): This long par five is not for the faint of heart. The fairway is narrow and lined with water, making the second shot a true test of accuracy. With the added challenge of the strong desert winds, the 12th often becomes a turning point in a round, where patience and power are required to make it to the green in regulation.
And lastly, my nemesis… the Par four 17th a 360m dogleg right is particularly tricky due to the elevated green, which requires a precise approach shot. The fairway is narrow and flanked by water, and the wind often adds an unpredictable element to the hole. It’s a true test of course management and execution under pressure.
What sets Al Hamra apart from many other courses is the stunning array of views that accompany each hole. From the moment you step on to the 1st tee, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah. The course runs alongside the coastline, offering sweeping vistas of the Gulf, with the crystal-clear waters sparkling in the sunlight.
But it’s not just the water that will catch your eye. The towering peaks of the Hajar Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop throughout the round. As the sun sets, the mountains glow in shades of red and orange, creating a picturesque scene that will leave a lasting impression long after your round is over.
Al Hamra Golf Course offers a captivating blend of challenge and natural beauty, with each hole presenting a set of unique challenges. Whether it’s the tricky water hazards or the strong winds that make certain holes particularly difficult, this course will test even the most seasoned golfers.
For golfers seeking a memorable round with a view, Al Hamra Golf Course in Ras Al Khaimah is a must-visit destination.
